I learned recently that David "Mad Dog" Dolby passed away. He won the Medal of Honor on his first tour in Vietnam; on his second tour he served in my platoon (2nd Platoon, C Co.) in 1969. He took me out on my first mission near Bong Song (LZ English). He earned the MOH with an M-60 and asked me if he could take one to the field if he was able to "legally" get one. I said sure. When most of the company had left Bong Song for Phan Thiet but me, a CID officer came around and told me that someone had stolen an M-60 from the guard tower the night before while the guards slept. Of course, I knew nothing about it (Heh,heh) and changed the subject to ask why the guards were sleeping. When I arrived in Phan Thiet, Dolby handed me a completed yellow requisition slip that made it "legal". Later, when a REMF officer saw Dolby get off a helicopter after a mission, I was threatened with a court martial if I continued to let him take it to the field because M-60's weren't in our "TO&E". Dolby carried the M-60 on every mission. I took this photo of Dolby with 2d Platoon Sgt "Luke" Henderson. --Lt. Rick Grimes

I am a friend of Earl David "Dallas" Broach from his home town of Dallas, Texas, although he went by his middle name and picked up the "Dallas" moniker in the Rangers:
Earl David Broach
8/3/70, Killed In Action Vietnam
K/75 RGR
08W78
We went to church together, hung out together and he was one of my role models. A number of us went out to dinner with him -- at Denny's -- on one of his last nights home before he returned to Vietnam for his second and last fateful tour.
I'm trying to find the Ranger whose place he took on point patrol that day - August 3, 1970 - as the other Ranger was sick. I've read several places that he feels guilty about it and I want to reassure him that David would have never wanted that.
He was a very good Christian with great parents who taught him great morals, a great upbringing, who believed in what he was doing. David wasn't drafted, he enlisted as soon as he graduated from W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas, Texas. He *wanted* to be a soldier and defend his country.
As a friend, I was humbled, sad and proud that I was part of the church youth choir that sang at his funeral. Yes, I cried, and I still think about him and miss him, but David did what he wanted to do.
Again, David would NOT want anyone feeling guilty or responsible for the decisions he made that day. So, I hope this message can reach that Ranger and hopefully bring him some peace.
To all of you who served our country in any war, either abroad or in the U.S., thank you from a grateful, patriotic American, whose father was an honorably discharged veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
God bless all of you.

I served with Company B, 2nd Battalion (Mechanized), 22nd Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. During the first week of April, 1970, we were called in to support the 75th Rangers in the Battle of The Renegade Woods. A memory of my tour in Vietnam I will never forget is when my unit came across the remains of two Rangers who were killed earlier in the battle and could not be recovered at the same time that the rest of the Ranger team was evacuated.
Staff Sergeant Michael Francis Thomas and Sergeant First Class Alvin Winslow Floyd, both from F Co, 75th Infantry Rangers, were two of the twelve brave men who died in the battle. You can find a very detailed and interesting description of the action that took place in the Renegade Woods at this web site:

I'm just touching base with this unit organization and to let you all know that I'm still alive and doing okay. I am still waiting for someone to contact me and tell me what has happened to Rey Martinez who was my team leader, Team 13 in F 58. He was from 1st Bridg. LRRP's who came to F 58 when they were merged with us after the 101st was organized in country. I had sent a Christmas card to him last Christmas and got one in return but it was from his wife and family. But Rey's name wasn't on it and I thought that was kinda funny. So after Christmas I sent his wife a letter hand written as to why Rey's name wasn't on the card and what was the deal. She never answered me back. That was in Jan. this year. Since I have put a email on this site and I'm not sure if anyone has contacted me yet on Rey's whereabouts.
So I'm asking again, does anyone from 1st Bridg. LRRP's know of what has happened to Rey Martinez.

Hi,
I'm working on a history of early LRRP operations in Europe, going back to 1956 (11th Airborne Division in Augsburg).
By the late 50s there were LRRP detachments in all Divisions and they were put together into Provisonal LRRP Companies assigned to V and VII Corps for Winter Shield I (winter of 1959-60) and Winter Shield II (1960-61) FTXs.
I would like to hear from anyone who served in those Provisional LRRP Companies or the LRRP detachments they were mostly drawn from.
I woujld also like to hear from anyone from the SETAF LRRP detachment in Italy.
I'm in Australia so best contact is murphy@gcom.net.au.
I am also booked into the Ranger Rendezvous at Columbus/Ft Benning in late July so would be happy to speak to anyone while I'm there.
If you live on the Left Coast between Seattle and San Francisco I will be passing through there in mid July and can interview you at home if that is easier.
I want to get these stories down on the record while we still can.

There will be a cookout hosted in the Chicago-Milwaukee metropolitan area for all individuals who served in a Ranger Unit or graduated from the US Army Ranger School. The event will be free of charge and will start at 11:00 am on June 18, 2011. It will be located at Silver Lake Park, which is about halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago, and easily accessible from I-94. Food and Beverages will be provided, and Tactical Santa, a Ranger-owned company based out of Chicago, will provide gifts and prizes to attendees. Spouses and children are welcome to attend. Please be sure to RSVP to the phone number or email below so that we can be sure to have enough food and drinks on hand.
Also, although I am a member of the 75th RRA, this event is open to all Rangers regardless of their affiliation with the 75th RRA, USARA, WAR, or any other Ranger organzation. Accordingly, please feel free to share this information with anyone you think might be interested.
Please feel free to call or email if you would like more information. My contact infomation is below.

Staff Sergeant Michael Francis Thomas and Sergeant First Class Alvin Winslow Floyd, both from F Co, 75th Infantry Rangers, were two of the twelve brave men who died in the battle. You can find a very detailed and interesting description of the action that took place in the Renegade Woods at this web site: http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/renegade/rtxt.htm
