| UNIT DIRECTOR - Bill Acebes (Bill's Message) | ||
My name is Brown, Roger B. Cpt. retired USA Infantry.
I entered the Army in 1963. I took basic and AIT at Fort Ord, California, attended Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia and was assigned to A Company 502nd Battle Group in the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.
In 1964 the Army went to the ROAD system (Battalions and Brigades). Our company went to the 1/502nd. I grew up as a rifleman, grenadier, fire team leader and squad leader. I went to Ranger school in 1965 and as soon as I graduated I re-enlisted to go to Vietnam.
In Vietnam, I was assigned to A 1/503 173rd Airborne Brigade separate. A short time later, my tac officer from Ranger School formed the LRRP Company and I departed the 1/503 for the LRRP. I was assigned as a team leader and immediately put my Ranger skills to work with a five man team.
After completing my tour in Vietnam, I was sent to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Four months later the 101st was alerted to go to Vietnam. We formed the 101st LRRP Company later to be F Co. 58th Inf. and then L Co. Rangers. I was shot in the chest in 1968 and was medevaced back to the states. After a couple months in the hospital I was assigned to the Ranger Department (Benning phase)
In the last part of 1970 I was promoted to E-7 and returned to Vietnam in the capacity of platoon sergeant assigned to N Co. Rangers 173rd Abn. Bde.
When I returned to the States I was assigned to the Ranger Department for a short period of time until I attended Officer Candidate School in February 1972.
After graduation from OCS as the leadership honor graduate, I was commissioned in the Infantry and was assigned to Ft. Ord, California.
In December of 1973, I was notified that I would be reassigned to Ft. Benning, as a Rifle Platoon Leader In Bravo Company First Ranger Battalion. (A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT).
I arrived at Ft. Benning in January 1974. (It felt great to be back among great soldiers.) In Bco. I served as a rifle Plt. Ldr., Weapons Plt. Ldr., Company XO. and for a short period of time as Company Commander. After being promoted to Captain, I was assigned as the Battalion assistant S-3.
I departed the 1/75th. in April 1977. I finished my Bachelors degree and graduated from the Infantry Officers Advance Course. I was subsequently assigned to the Ranger Department as OIC of Camp Darby and Company Commander of the 3rd. Ranger Company.
In 1981 I was assigned to SETAF G-3 in Vicenza, Italy, as the assistant G-3 with the responsibility of deploying the 509th. Abn. Inf.
THE FIRST RANGER BATTALION ---That was something I was longing to hear when stationed at Ft. Ord,California. I only had four words to say when asked if I could be there in one week. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY.
I had the privilege to be the third person in the First Battalion. I can only say that it was very exciting to be there at that time and to be here at this time serving the BEST MILITARY FORCE IN THE WORLD. This is a very large family and families should come together whenever possible so check back with us and come to whatever you can, join our association and enjoy the Ranger Community. You will always be welcomed home SOLDIER.
