| UNIT DIRECTOR - Steve Houghton (Steve's Message) | ||
Welcome! Welcome to all who stop in to visit the Unit site of the “Redcatcher Lrrps” Well, yes, we technically were a “Long Range Patrol” unit, assigned to the 199th Light Infantry. The soldiers of the 199th were know as “Redcatchers” partly because of their unique shoulder patch , and their job of catching and disposing of all the “Reds” around Saigon.
Our unit was the “71st Infantry Detachment”. It was a “Long Range Patrol” unit. Long Range Patrol, Long Range Recon Patrol, one was pretty much the same as the other. As far as we were concerned we were “lrrps”! Those “ crazy fu-----s” that were both despised and admired at the same time. Despised by the spit and polish disciplinarian types, and admired, secretly of course, by those who lacked the “stones” to do the stuff we did, and those who knew the full importance of the intelligence we gathered.
There are not many of us. We were a small unit, usually only 50-60 strong at any given time. The unit formed in 1967 as a Long Range Patrol unit, and was deactivated in 1970. By then the unit was know as M Company 75th Rangers.
The Army declared all such type units as “Rangers -75th Regiment” in Jan-Feb 1969. That’s why all whoever served in this unit are qualified for membership in the 75th Ranger Regiment Association. There are probably no more than 200-300 of us who ever served this unit.
Did you serve? Join us! There are lots of reasons to join. Find and reacquaint with long lost buddies. Attend association reunions, receive quarterly issues of “Patrolling” magazine. The best magazine of it type, it’s full of stories from our “time”, and has articles relating to veterans needs and issue of today. Our association is active in supporting the modern day Rangers. Giving help and support we only wished we had back “then”.
So regardless if you’re here just to visit and learn, or maybe check us out and sign up, at least take a minute and sign the “guestbook”.
Thanks for stopping in and remember, “Rangers Lead the Way”
Sincerely
Steve Houghton
